How can art therapy help with trauma?

When we experience stress or trauma, our nervous system can become dysregulated, making it difficult to think clearly, feel safe, or connect with others. Expressive arts therapy gently integrates the body's senses and embodied experience into the therapeutic process. This is because our experiences are not only stored as memories in the mind, but are also held in the body and nervous system.

Art making and creative expression engages sensory and non-verbal parts of the brain. This can help to:
  • Support nervous system regulation
  • Reduce overwhelm and anxiety
  • Create distance from distressing material
  • Allow complex feelings to be explored safely
  • Build insight and self-awareness
  • Help to rewrite personal narratives

In arts therapy, the artwork provides a contained space where emotions can be expressed, observed, and gradually integrated. This creative process can support meaning-making and the development of new personal narratives, helping trauma survivors move beyond survival towards resilience, vitality and a renewed sense of aliveness.
